Lara Suburb Profile
Lara was established around the mid-1800s and emerged as a charming suburb on the outskirts of the City of Greater Geelong. It spreads over 14.5 square kilometres, some 18 kilometres northeast of Geelong’s city center. It’s 62 kilometers south-west of Melbourne.
Statistics indicate that Lara is attractive to new residents. The town’s 2021 census showed a population of 15,487, up 3% from the 13,327 reported in 2016.
Lara West Poised For Growth
Great news for investors and buyers of Lara real estate. The town has been identified as a growth area under Geelong’s regional plan. This plan projects a fully planned community in the town’s west area which will accommodate about 11,000 residents.

Families in Lara with school-age kids can enrol them in one of the three primary schools serving the town: St. Anthony’s, Lara Lake Primary, and Lara Primary. The town is also home to the Lara Secondary College which accommodates grades 7 to 12.
Commute for work, business, or leisure to the central business districts of Victoria is convenient for residents of Lara. The V/Line passenger train has a station in the town. By train from Lara, it takes just 11 minutes to get to Geelong and one hour to Melbourne.
