About The Portarlington Region

Portarlington is one of the popular retirement and holiday destinations in Victoria, Australia, and the reason for this is quite obvious. This township spreads over about 40 square kilometres on the elevated, picturesque northeastern tip of the Bellarine Peninsula.

On a clear day, Portarlington residents enjoy views of Melbourne which is just some 42 kilometres across Port Philip Bay. Notably, ferry boat service is available from Portarlington to Docklands in Melbourne. By road, the town is also only 28 kilometres east of Victoria’s second-largest city, Geelong.

Initially named Drayton, Portarlington was established in the 1850s, with settlers from Ireland as its pioneers. The town’s name is believed to have been derived from a namesake Irish town or was honorific of the first Earl of Arlington, Sir Henry Bennet.

Portarlington registered 3,619 residents in its 2016 census that also showed the average age of the town’s population at 60-plus. This population is bound to increase moving forward, owing to the town’s popularity amongst retirees and Australia’s ageing population. Notably, Australians aged 65 years and over have been projected to increase by 139 per cent from the year 2000 to 2030.
