Torquay is a seaside town on the southern edge of Victoria. Folks are drawn to live in Torquay because of its beaches and proximity to the city of Geelong just some 20 kilometres north of the town.
This town was first settled in the 1840s and was then called Spring Creek after the body of water at the town’s western periphery. The town was renamed Torquay in the 1890s, adopting the name of the hometown in Devon, England, of one of its first settlers.
In more recent years, Torquay established its claim to fame from its being the gateway to the 240-kilometre Great Ocean Road, a scenic highway iconic of the southwestern coast of Australia. Many also consider Torquay as Australia’s surf capital, thanks mainly to the surfer-friendly waves at Bell Beach off the town’s western shoreline.

Demonstrating Torquay’s strong affinity with surfers, the town is host to the Australia Surf World Museum that celebrates the nation’s surfing culture. Two global surf brands—Quicksilver and Rip Curl—also originated from Torquay.
